Red Snapper Fishery - A Legislator's Case for State

As an avid Mississippi Gulf Coast recreational angler, I'm dismayed that we've allowed red snapper management in the Gulf of Mexico to become so convoluted and polarized. Amendment 40, also known as "sector separation," currently before the Gulf Council seeks to drive a wedge between the charter/for-hire and private recreational angler as a solution to the inept federal management of red snapper. Mississippi is the perfect example of where, as the fish get bigger and the quota is reached more quickly, we have fewer days to fish.

Public Action Needed to Protect Access for Gulf of Mexico Recreational Anglers

July 14, 2014 (Washington, DC) - The Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council (Council) is currently moving ahead on a proposed amendment that will divide segments of the recreational fishing community against each other without addressing the fundamental problems with recreational red snapper management. Amendment 40, also known as "sector separation," will divide the recreational angler's 49% share of the snapper fishery roughly in half between private recreational anglers and charter-for-hire and head boat owners.

April 2, 2014 (Washington, D.C.) - This morning, sportsmen-friendly legislators upheld Governor Heineman’s veto of Nebraska L 671, and, in so doing, protected the future of successful science-based natural resource management, while also upholding the integrity of Nebraska's state constitution. While Nebraska L 671 would have done nothing to help the mountain lion population or any other species of wildlife in the state, it would have undermined the future of hunting and fishing in America's heartland.

Sunday Hunting Restrictions Lifted in Virginia

March 6, 2014 (Washington, DC) - Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has signed Sunday hunting into law, allowing Virginia to join the 40 other states that allow hunting on privately owned lands on Sundays. Sponsored by Delegate Todd Gilbert, and cosponsored by many members of the Virginia Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus, HB 1237 passed the Senate on February 18 (28-11) after clearing the House of Delegates on January 30 (71-27). An identical bill (SB 154) sponsored by Senator Phillip Puckett also reached the Governor's desk, after passing the Senate on February 10 (29-10) and later the House on February 28 (73-24).

Subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson Withdraws Bighorn Sheep Amendment to Interior Appropriation Bill
