(Clinton, SC) - Pro-sportsmen state legislators and hunting, fishing and conservation industry leaders from around the country met in Clinton, South Carolina this weekend for the annual three day National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses Sportsman-Legislator Summit.
Legislators and industry leaders left the summit armed with ideas designed to protect and enhance their constituents hunting, fishing and conservation opportunities. Members of the legislative caucus also elected new leadership for 2009.
Members of the Executive Council are elected by state caucus members at the summit and officers of the council are elected by sitting members of the Executive Council. Returning to the Executive Council are: South Carolina Representative Mike Pitts, Florida Representative Baxter Troutman, Pennsylvania Representative Marc Gergely, Texas Representative Carl Isett, Arkansas Representative Mike Burris, Illinois Representative Brandon Phelps, Kentucky Representative Robin Webb, and Missouri Representative Jason Brown. New members elected to the Executive Council included: New Mexico Representative Candy Spence-Ezzell and Colorado Senator Dan Gibbs. Rep. Pitts was elected President of the Council. He takes over for Senator Astle, who has led NASC for the past year. "John Astle has lead NASC with determination to accomplish our mission statement and has been an excellent mentor, the NASC nor I would be where we are today without his leadership," said Rep. Pitts.
In speaking for the first time as the President at the closing awards banquet, Representative Pitts said, "This organization has come a long way since the beginning and has accomplished a lot, but I believe we have done more than just grow or climb in the last four years, and the large response and attendance at this meeting proves exactly how far we have come."
"We are proud of all of the NASC accomplishments to date and look forward to working with Representative Pitts in his new capacity as president of the Executive Council," stated CSF president, Jeff Crane. "More successes for hunters and anglers will no doubt be forthcoming under the leadership of this new Executive Council."
Comprised of 35 state sportsmen's caucuses, with an affiliation of more than 2,500 pro hunting and fishing legislators, the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses is guided by the Executive Council, which adopts issue briefs and sets standards for affiliated state caucuses.
