National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses Celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day

September 23, 2010 (Washington, DC) –  The National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC), on behalf of the over 2,000 state sportsman-legislator members, proudly celebrates the 38th Anniversary of National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday, September 25.

National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) began in 1972 as a reminder to the American people that the millions of hunters and anglers are the backbone of the American conservation ethos.

“As we recognize the important contribution of sportsmen to the conservation of fish and wildlife habitat that we all enjoy and contributions to the economy of each state, we are proud to be a part of that heritage and thrilled that people around the nation also celebrate the contributions of hunters and anglers," said NASC Executive Council President, Rep. Mike Pitts of South Carolina.

As a celebration of hunting, fishing, trapping and the shooting sports, NHFD brings together sportsmen from across all 50 states to recognize the contributions of hunters and anglers to conservation in America.

“Hunters and anglers are the original conservationists,” said NASC Executive Council Secretary, Sen. Robin Webb of Kentucky. “As legislators and as sportsmen and women, we take very seriously our duty to contribute to the stewardship of our precious national resources.”

“Some of the greatest joys and memories in my life were the experiences I’ve had hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors in God’s creation,” said NASC Executive Council Vice-President Rep. Mike Burris of Arkansas. “We are truly blessed in that each and every one of us has the opportunity to pursue our passion for hunting and fishing, while so many people in other parts of the world cannot, and it’s a heritage we must never take for granted.”

The USA Olympic Shooting Team is serving as honorary chair for 2010.

NHFD has been officially proclaimed for the fourth Saturday in September every year by every U.S. President from Richard M. Nixon through Barack Obama.
