Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus Top Guns Compete at Annual Shoot
May 6, 2010 (WASHINGTON, DC) - For the second year in a row the team of Democratic Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) members won the annual bi-partisan Congressional Shoot-Out by a score of 225-209.
The annual Shoot-Out, organized by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and presented by ATK, the National Rifle Association (NRA), and The Outdoor Channel, pits the Democrats against the Republicans in a friendly skeet, trap and sporting clays shooting competition to determine the top guns in Congress.
The event included over 120 shooters, including 12 current members of the Congress. Other participants included former members of the CSC, senior Administration officials, members of the CSF Board of Directors and other outdoor industry and conservation representatives. The Shoot-Out has become one of the few opportunities for members of Congress to come together and share their mutual enjoyment of the outdoors and the shooting sports.
“The members of the CSC understand the importance of America’s outdoor traditions and the shooting sports and their continued participation in the yearly bipartisan event shows the members commitment to that tradition,” said CSF President Jeff Crane.
The Democratic team was led by CSC House Co-Chair Rep. Dan Boren and included Rep. Mike Thompson, Rep. Chris Carney, Rep. Leonard Boswell, and Rep. Lincoln Davis. Republican team leader and House Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Paul Ryan joined fellow Republicans Rep. Duncan Hunter, Jr., Rep. Bob Latta, Rep. Don Young, Rep. Steve King, Rep. Tom Rooney, and Rep. John Kline.
“Spending a day shooting helps build camaraderie and cooperation among the members of the Caucus that we need in order to work closer together on issues of importance to sportsmen and women in Congress,” said Rep. Ryan.
“I look forward to the Congressional Shoot Out every year because it allows me to meet informally and on a bi-partisan basis with fellow sportsmen who support hunting, fishing and the shooting sports,” said Rep. Carney.
The top individual Congressional shooters for the day included Top Gun, Rep. Hunter; Top Republican Gun, Rep. Kline; Top Democrat Gun, Rep. Thompson; Top Skeet Shooter, Rep. Carney; Top Trap Shooter, Rep. Boren; Top Sporting Clay Shooter, Rep. Ryan.
In remarks made Wednesday on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Boren claimed Democratic member bragging rights by commenting, “I invite all Republican members to visit 216 Cannon, in my office, to visit the trophy at any time.”
The individual winners of the overall competition at the Tuesday shoot were: Top Gun, Scott Robertson from The Outdoor Channel; Top Skeet Shooter, Charlie Conger from Remington; Top Trap Shooter, Shane Naylor of Remington; Top Sporting Clay Shooter, Curtis Maudlin also from Remington.
In addition to the Congressional Shoot-Out held on Tuesday, member teams from the outdoor industry competed in the annual Industry Challenge on Wednesday. The winning Industry Challenge team was Team Remington, consisting of shooters Conger, Naylor, and Maudlin. The second place team was from Cabela’s, shooters from Team Cabela’s were Randy Moeller, Sean Streff, and Rich Robbins.
