Proposed ESA Reform Focuses on Landowner Tax Incentives

Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus Co-Chair Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) plans to introduce legislation next week that would provide tax incentives for landowners who help endangered species. By focusing on tax incentives, the bill would remain in the hands of the Senate Finance Committee, as opposed to those with traditional authority over Endangered Species Act revisions. Sen. Crapo said the bill is "very close to being ready to introduce" as he finalizes cosponsors. He has indicated that a formal announcement will be made when the Senate returns after the President's Day recess. Thirty-six hunting and fishing organizations have already gone on record as supporting the anticipated bill.
