Migratory Bird Conservation Commission Approves Refuge Expansions
The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission recently approved expansions to the National Wildlife Refuge System and 34 conservation projects. The Commission approved more than $13 million to acquire 6,566 acres habitat for the Refuge System with funds generated from the purchase of Federal Duck Stamps, import duties on firearms and ammunition and right-of-way payments to the system. The Commission also approved more than $22.6 million from the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund for conservation projects in 14 U.S. states and Mexico. U.S. partners in 21 of the projects will match that amount with $74.1 million, enabling partners to restore more than 121,156 acres of wetlands, while partners in Mexico will add nearly $4 million to conserve 156,000 acres of habitat in that country. The Commission includes Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus members Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS), Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), and Representative John Dingell (D-MI).
