(3-29-07) Migratory Bird Conservation Commission Approves Refuge Expansions - The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission recently approved expansions to the National Wildlife Refuge System and 34 conservation projects. The Commission approved more than $13 million to acquire 6,566 acres habitat for the Refuge System with funds generated from the purchase of Federal Duck Stamps, import duties on firearms and ammunition and right-of-way payments to the system.

(3-29-07) Hunting on Refuges Needs Your Support - In 2003, on the eve of the FWS 100th anniversary of the Wildlife Refuge System, the Fund for Animals filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop hunting on refuges. Hunting on refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System has continued, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has agreed to amend or rewrite environmental assessments that describe the environmental impacts of hunting programs at some 70 national wildlife refuges across the country.

(3-29-07) Sportsmen’s Coalition Speaks Out Against Navy Landing Field - A coalition of the nation's leading sporting, conservation, and environmental organizations held a press conference today on the controversial subject of a proposed Navy Super Hornet landing field less than 4 miles from the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. As home to more than 100,000 swans, geese, and ducks, the site is considered one of the nation's most important refuges for waterfowl and wildlife.

(3-8-07) Sportsmen’s Taxes Estimated to Deliver $416.9 Million for State Fish & Wildlife Agencies - Excise taxes paid by the nation’s hunters, shooters, archers, anglers and boaters will provide $416.9 million for state fish and wildlife agencies this year, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The funds collected on hunting and fishing equipment are distributed for conservation and education programs.

(3-8-07) Legislative Initiatives for Aquatic Resources Discussed by SFBPC - The Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council met this week for its first meeting of 2007. The SFBPC, a federal advisory board to the Secretary of the Interior and Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, discussed efforts to move the National Fish Habitat Action Plan forward. Discussion also focused on the key role sportsmen’s caucuses as the federal and state level play in implementing and moving forward legislative priorities of importance to the boating and fishing community.

(3-8-07) Hunting as a Management Tool in National Parks - In 2006, CSF encouraged Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to consider a policy shift that would allow hunters to manage overpopulated game species on National Park Service lands. Recently, two members of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus introduced legislation to open the door for elk hunting in some national parks.

(2-22-07) CSF Works with B.A.S.S. to Modify Federal Rule Affecting Recreational Fishing - B.A.S.S. and CSF have been in discussions with the USDA concerning the pending interim rule on viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS). VHS is a pathogen affecting 37 species freshwater fish that has already caused major fish kills in several portions of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. A Federal Order from the USDA issued in November prohibits the transport of live fish from states at risk for VHS.
