2007 Report of Accomplishments

CSF President, Jeff Crane and Chairman, Jim Baker

Letter from the President and Chairman

We know that nothing stops you from pursuing your game; not wind, not heat, not rain, not snow. Like you, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation will brave the political elements, no matter which way the winds blow and we won’t rest until we succeed.

In 2007, we continued to advance the pro-sportsmen’s agenda in the political climate of Congress and in the State Capitols across the nation. Even in the drought conditions of these tight fiscal times, we advocated and received strong funding in appropriations bills for sportsmen related priorities and we forged forward on key
issues that will shape the future health of hunting and fishing in America.

This report focuses on access in the five key issue areas of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. Access is the banner issue and the key that unlocks the abundant opportunities for the sportsmen of America.

Loss of access ranks as the top reason hunters and anglers turn away from their pursuits and unfortunately access to public and private lands and waters continues to decline. As you will read in this report, CSF and NASC are actively working on multiple fronts to ensure sportsmen are gaining ground on access.

Funding for wildlife conservation is another key focus area for CSF and NASC. State fish and wildlife agencies face the daunting task of trying to manage their public lands and wildlife resources for a diverse group of outdoor enthusiasts. As the nation’s fish, wildlife, and vital natural areas feel ever-increasing pressures from development and reduced budgets, greater public investment is needed to help fish and wildlife managers turn the tide. Crucial in gaining access to state lands is the need for continued and increased funding for state fish and wildlife managers.

Like a great hunt or fishing adventure, the most rewarding are those that involve the most effort and perseverance. Long-term solutions to the critical issues discussed in this report cannot be achieved overnight. Neither will solutions be found in changing course with the political winds. Dedication to the cause, endurance and expertise are the keys to a successful campaign. The CSF and NASC, working with our team of sportsmen legislators continue to navigate through the changing tides with high expectations for favorable winds, a bright day and a clear horizon.
